Thora Birch

Thora Birch (born March 11, 1982) is an American actress and producer. Her film debut was in Purple People Eater (1988) which earned her the Young Artist Award for "Best Young Actress Under Nine Years of Age". Birch gained notoriety as a child actress with appearances in films including All I Want for Christmas (1991), Patriot Games (1992), Hocus Pocus (1993), Monkey Trouble (1994), Now and Then (1995) as well as Alaska (1996).Her first big role was in 1999 when she starred as Jane Burnham in the highly critically acclaimed film American Beauty, for which she was awarded an BAFTA nomination for Best Supporting Actress. She then starred as Enid in the critically acclaimed Ghost World (2001), receiving a nomination for the Golden Globe for Best Actress. In 2003, Birch received an Emmy Award nomination for playing the title character in Homeless to Harvard The Liz Murray Story. Her other films include Dungeons & Dragons (2000), The Hole (2001), Silver City (2004), Dark Corners (2006), Winter of Frozen Dreams (2009), and Petunia (2012).After having a break from acting, Birch was back in the spotlight in the year 2016 and has since appeared in a variety of independent films. Birch also played Whisperer Mary and Gamma on season 10 of The Walking Dead (2019-2020). Birch was born in Los Angeles, the eldest child of Jack Birch and Carol Connors. Birch her family's initial surname was Biersch, is of German-Jewish, Scandinavian, French-Canadian and Italian heritage.  Her name, "Thora," is derived from the Norse god of lightning and thunder "Thor" and would have been her name, when she was a boy. Kian Bolt Birch is her younger brother. Both of her parents have been actors in adult films and appeared in Deep Throat. Because of their own experience with the entertainment industry, they were hesitant to support the actress, but were convinced to show Thora's photo to agents by a babysitter who noticed her imitating commercials. Her first break came at the age of four, after her babysitter brought her along to auditions for an Quaker Oats commercial.
